Loris Cristante was born in Venice, Italy (1951) and currently lives in a village of Quebec’s Eastern Townships (Canada). He studied mathematics and later medicine in Italy and Germany. He developed an early interested in photography and briefly toyed with the idea of becoming a professional photographer. With that in mind, in the early seventies, he had short stint as an assistant to a fashion photographer. After a year, he decided to continue his medical studies and pursued, later on, a career in academic neurosurgery.
Yet, photography has remained, throughout the years, an important analytical and expressive tool for interacting with the different environments he was exposed to. His primary interest remains focused mainly on reflecting upon and illustrating specific aspects of the social and cultural transformation the urban environment is undergoing .
This site offers an overview of some projects he pursued over the last twenty some years, since he transitioned to digital photography. Some of the projects, that are perceived still relevant in today’s cultural discourse, remain open.
The compositions and chromatic choices of his photographs reflect a subtle emotional approach that does not discard a rational look at the situation with an occasional, interspersed ironic note.
